Youngstown City Schools District Reconfiguration 2026-2027

It is with great transparency, optimism, and commitment to our scholars and community that we announce Phase 1 and Phase 2 of Youngstown City Schools' reconfiguration plan—a strategic effort to unify and strengthen educational opportunity.

The goal of the reconfiguration plan is to ensure that every scholar has access to robust academic programs, high-quality instruction, and a cohesive school identity while using our resources responsibly and sustainably. Read the complete press release here.

Phase 1: High School Consolidation

The plan's first phase, which will be implemented in the 2026-2027 school year, is unifying our two traditional high schools, Chaney and East, into one central high school located at the current East High School Site.

  • New school names, mascots, etc., will be decided with scholar and family input.

Early College Programs

  • Rayen Early College High School and Rayen Early College Middle School will remain operating. The goal is to eventually house both schools in one building at the current Chaney High School site.

Transportation

  • The Youngstown Board of Education is reviewing ways to return high school busing in the 2026 school year. However, we face significant challenges due to current legislative requirements that obligate us to transport students who do not attend Youngstown City Schools. We are asking our community to stand with us as we advocate for legislative adjustments that would ease these burdens and allow us to prioritize transportation for our own scholars.

Phase 2: Middle School Consolidation

The district will also unite our two middle schools, Chaney and East Middle, into one campus, housed at the Current East Middle School site.

Community Input

  • The district will host public town halls to welcome scholars' and community voices and have this dedicated website with up-to-date information. We value your input and encourage all community members to get involved and help us shape the future of YCSD.

*The first public comment meeting will be held at the Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Board of Education meeting. More details to follow.
