Information for Immigrant Families

The Youngstown City Schools are required to provide a free public education to all children, regardless of immigration status. This includes children who are undocumented, homeless, or refugees.

In light of recent changes to immigration policies, we recognize the alert this has caused for many of our families, staff, and scholars concerned about safety. This letter is to reassure you about Youngstown City Schools' commitment to a scholar-centered education and the well-being of all scholars by supporting an inclusive, safe environment.

Our commitment to safety is underpinned by our adherence to District policies, school safety procedures, and state and federal laws. Should we ever be contacted about scholar information, every building leader is trained to follow the correct procedures, contacting the superintendent or chief of staff with specific law enforcement requests, who will, in turn, seek guidance from the District's legal counsel.

Youngstown City Schools sincerely thanks you for entrusting us with your scholar's education. We remain committed to upholding the safety, dignity, and support of all scholars and families.

Key Reminders:

We want you to know that the Youngstown City Schools:

  • Does not permit federal agents, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to enter schools, except when absolutely required by law;

  • Does not track immigration status of students or family members, and will not release student information unless absolutely required to by law; and

  • Will continue to ensure that all students get a quality education.

  • Public schools are at the center of our democracy, and Youngstown City Schools remains a safe place for all students, families, educators and staff members.
